After almost a year of development the V4R / SL flash is here. Through extensive testing we’ve managed to safety increase the performance of the motorcycle without compromising reliability. We aren’t just talking about peak numbers here, we found power across the entire RPM range and better overall rideability. Each change we’ve made improves the motorcycle not only in outright speed, but also smoothness and consistency at the track. The result is our Stage 1 flash. This flash can also be used for the V4 Superleggera as both bikes share the exact same engine.
Why Is This The Best Upgrade You Can Buy?
Currently, there is only one option to flash the V4R and it requires the purchase of a FULL exhaust system. The changes in the flash are mostly fueling changes and can be VASTLY improved upon. This flash cannot be purchased independently without the purchase of the exhaust system. So what do people that have slip-on exhaust do? There’s nothing they can do at the moment. Our diagnostic tool is the only option for people looking for a flash without the purchase of an exhaust.
With or without an exhaust flash, we all know the Ducati V4R / SL is a masterpiece! We also know it isn’t perfect. Issues that we’ve tested ourselves and what customers have reported include the following:
- There’s only one flash on the market and it requires you to spend thousands on a new exhaust system.
- Stalling for no reason during idle
- Startup issues when exhaust is installed
- Acceleration that isn’t smooth through the entire RPM range or at low RPM (mainly with aftermarket exhaust)
- Engine seems to struggle (lurch or jump through RPM range) if too warm
- Power that seems “tame” compared to it its 1103cc brother, the V4
- Engine light appears after modified exhaust is installed
So What Do We Do About This?
After extensive R&D with the Ducati V4R / SL, we can confidently say that we successfully addressed each issue and improved every performance aspect of the V4R.
- No more stalling at idle for no reason
- No startup issues with exhaust installed
- Acceleration is now smooth through the entire RPM range with aftermarket exhaust
- Engine performs the same with the engine warm or hot and stays consistent
But I Already Have A Flash That Came With My Exhaust. Why Do I Need This?
When you buy an Akrapovic full system you get a map from the dealer to upload. You are not allowed to upload this yourself and technically the dealer isn’t allowed to upload it either (if your street bike is actually ridden on public roads). This exhaust is for off-road use only and is stipulated on the inside of both mufflers. The flash is very basic. Rev limit is increased, engine light from missing exhaust valve is turned off, AFR (air fuel ratio) is changed to accommodate the new exhaust and the ignition map is altered. There’s no available updates or changes (should you decide to upgrade more engine components) and it’s made for pump fuel only.
Do You Have A Slip-On System? No Support For You!
There is absolutely NO support for ANY slip-on system or any second hand full exhaust system! If you switch systems this can cause a headache and most of the fuel devices or flashes on the market that claim to be in development have all but been abandon at this point.
When you buy any slip on system, including: Akrapovic, SC Project, AR Racing, Arrow, etc. There is NO tuning or flash solution. This means you get an exhaust valve code (check engine light on the dash, permanently), a 20hp/tq loss down low from lack of fuel (lean!). Fueling is so bad that some riders have gone back to stock. The bike surges and feels like something is wrong (because something IS wrong).
Our diagnostic tool allows the user the ability to use a slip-on or full system. We have extensively tested MANY exhaust systems and gathered data on what fueling changes to make. We also accommodate for multiple mod combinations and even different fuels! (91/93/100/MR12). Our Stage 1 flash will make you fall in love with your bike all over again. See below for AFR mapping infograph.
AFTERMARKET EXHAUST AFR (AIR/FUEL RATIO) VS BT Moto STAGE 1
Below you’ll see the extended AFR (air/fuel ratio) graph BT Moto Stage 1 Flash (red lines) vs the stock tune, both with aftermarket exhaust and done back to back on our in-house DynoJet. The lines under the power and torque grid is the AFR (air/fuel ratio). You can see where the stock mapping get’s extremely lean (18.8 peak). Our mapping corrects this and you can see how the power responds to the better AFR.
**Short exhausts like SC Project, for example, require the use of baffles to maintain good rideability and optimal performance**
DYNO PROVEN
Constant and repetitive testing is needed to get a good idea of exactly what’s needed in tuning. We need to test cold, warm, hot, different fuels, real world testing, dyno testing, etc. Always with proper logging software to ensure the motorcycle is well-within safety margins and does not exceed it’s capability. We are aiming for performance, but also reliability and smoothness. Even the idle was adjusted to ensure your motorcycle doesn’t have any issues.
Below you’ll see some of the testing we conducted on our own DynoJet. With our Stage 1 flash you can see large gains, but not only peak power. The entire RPM range benefits from our flash. This means more power everywhere and better light-to-light rideability. More torque means better mid-range. With the V4R lacking the 103cc’s the V4 has, more torque is always welcome.
Below is a detailed dyno sheet from our in-house dyno testing. We removed the final numbers because all dyno’s are different and read power differently. What’s important is the gain over a baseline dyno. We consistently see a 10% gain in power and torque with our flash (with MR12 race fuel). Expect 5% gains with pump gas. Keep in mind that with our diagnostic tool, you’ll have the ability to store multiple files and changes them trackside for different fuels or track conditions.
- Green line – BT Moto Stage 1 flash with MR12 race fuel
- Blue line – BT Moto Stage 1 flash with 93 octane pump gas
- Red line – Stock tuning with aftermarket exhaust
**All in-house testing performed with 93 octane pump gas. Usage of a lower octane will yield smaller power gains.**
So What Does Stage 1 Include?
- Recalibrated fueling on both cylinder banks for better horsepower and torque on 91, 93 and MR12 race fuel
- Ability to raise RPM limiter to 16,500 in all gears except first and second. This is what is seen on the Akrapovic Exhaust flash but only in sixth gear
- Raised torque limiters
- Raised load limiters
- Ignition timing adjustments made for 93 and MR12 mapping for additional power
- Throttle mapping smoothed out at all throttle ranges for a smooth, around town experience and entry/exit cornering found on the Factory V4R
- Lean spike or “dead spot” found at 5,000 RPM with stock exhaust fixed
- Diagnostic tool with the ability to change maps trackside
- A race fuel map and a pump gas map (more mapping is available upon request)
INDEPENDENT TESTING BY DYNOJET USA THEMSELVES
We were lucky enough to have Dynojet in Las Vegas test this product vs. their current tune. From our customer, Mark: “So far so good with the current map in the bike. As you know the power is very strong. This number was achieved on a DynoJet dyno at DynoJet in Las Vegas. The map works well in all areas. Throttle tip in is smooth with no on/off light switch tendencies. The bike cleanly screams to redline.”
**ALL dyno runs, including baseline, on this V4R were done using VP U4.4 racing fuel. This customer does not run pump gas in their motorcycle. Bigger gains are possible with VP MR12 Racing fuel or U4.4. This motorcycle had full Akrapovic Exhaust and Akrapovic mapping for baseline results. Below is what our custom mapping was able to gain beyond the Akrapovic Mapping.**
THE BT MOTO DIAGNOSTIC TOOL
WHAT IS A DIAGNOSTIC TOOL AND WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF HAVING ONE?
Thoroughly tested by our own engineers, not just for its function but also durability. We purposefully dropped this thing about 100 times just to make sure if you accidentally dropped it, it would still be a usable device.
So why buy it when you can just send in your ECU for flashing and spend less? Let’s see the breakdown.
NO DOWNTIME – No need to send in your ECU or remove it from your bike at all. You order the diagnostic tool, it get’s delivered to you, you flash your bike. You never miss a day of riding and no effort removing the ECU.
STORE MULTIPLE MAPS – When you send in your ECU, you only get one map. You might be thinking, “why would I need more than one map?”. Storing multiple maps means you’re able to flash for different fuels. If you’re a serious track competitor, we can work with you to get you different mapping for different tracks. If, for example, you’re add an exhaust to your stock bike, we can email you a file that takes the new exhaust into account with the changes you need to optimize your vehicle’s new modifications.
GO BACK TO STOCK ANYTIME – Not only can you store multiple race maps, you can also flash the original, stock file back into the bike at any time and for any reason.
